WILLIAM CHARLES “Charley†COEN, 57, was born on October 27, 1955 in Perryton, Texas and passed from this life on Sunday, June 10, 2012, just outside the Town of Laverne, in the pursuit of his duties as a reserve deputy for Harper County.
Charley graduated from Shattuck High School with the Class of 1971. He then moved to Woodward and spent the summer working pipeline 7 days a week. Charley soon found work as a musician with some local groups when he was offered a spot in a Norman-based band and moved there. Soon after his arrival in Norman, he went to work as a psychiatric assistant. Charley attended OU for a couple of semesters but later decided to follow his heart and pursue a career as a professional musician. A number of years later, Charley became tired of life on the road, returning to Norman. He worked at several music-related jobs and eventually established himself as a studio guitarist and teacher during his off hours. This led Charley to having the opportunity to join a successful country group that later became known as “Ricochetâ€. Finding it difficult to raise a family from a tour bus, Charley returned once again to Norman and started his own business. In 1994, he met and later married the love of his life, Lori McCullough Key. In 2000, they decided to sell the business and other properties and build their own house in the country near Wynona. In 2003, Charley was offered the job of Chief of Police in Wynona. Charley worked since then in law enforcement as a police officer and chaplain for the City of Hominy, the Town of Laverne and as a reserve deputy for Harper County. He became a C.L.E.E.T. certified officer in the A1101 Class in June, 2011.
His first love became serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ as a chaplain and minister. Charley also dearly loved his wife and family. He also enjoyed his music, singing and writing songs, and playing jam sessions. Charley had a great appreciation for sunrises with a good cup of coffee and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Preceding him in death were his biological parents, Efton and Laveta Manning, his adoptive mother, Darlene Coen, two brothers, Jimmy Manning and Gary Carpenter, a sister, Barbara Manning, his stepmother, Frances Carpenter Manning and his father-in-law, Bob McCullough.
Survivors include his wife, Lori, of the home, children, Jessica, Jana, Jimmy and his wife, Magen, Dustin and Tona; grandchildren, Aiden Coen, Orin Coen and Elijah McCullough; father, Ralph Coen; sister, Glenda Miller; brothers, Billy and his wife Connie, Danny and his wife Patty, Gary Manning, David Carpenter and his wife Sharan, Larry Carpenter, and Christopher Coen; sisters-in-law, Cindy Fields, Sandy McCullough, Shelly Ratliff, Janet Craddock and Rhonda Collins; mother-in-law, Janet McCullough; numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and many, many friends.
