A Graveside Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at the Rose Cemetery in Hobart, Oklahoma for Victoria Merkle. Miss Merkle's nephew, Joseph Faulds, will perform the service.
Victoria Merkle was born on March 10, 1936 in Hobart, Oklahoma, the daughter of Florence and Edward Merkle. The youngest of seven children, Victoria had three stepbrothers; Jess, Bill, and Edward (Bud); and three sisters; Martha, Mollie and Mary. Victoria passed away on January 30, 2015, in Houston, Texas, just 6 weeks prior to her 80th birthday. When she was a year old, Victoria was stricken with encephalitis from which she nearly died. Victoria survived, but suffered brain damage as a result of the prolonged high fever.
Vicky, as she was known by her family and friends, was a remarkable person who, despite being handicapped, lived a long and productive life. She attended special schools in Dallas, Texas; Vancouver, Washington; and in Austin, Texas. These years of special education resulted in Vicky's achieving a high level of competence which served her well in the tasks of daily living.
After both of her parents had passed away, Vicky went to live with her sister, Martha Merkle Faulds, in Seattle, Washington. She attended a special school in Vancouver, British Columbia. Subsequently, she moved to a wonderful facility in Austin, Texas and worked for Goodwill Industries for ten years. In 1985, Vicky moved to Houston, Texas. She lived at the Houston Center for the Retarded, Cullen Hall. The Center is a privately funded charitable organization that has a wonderful sheltered workshop. It was there that Vicky mastered the fine art of caning. For twenty years, Vicky was an integral part of the well-known and well-respected team of people who repaired cane furniture.
Vicky was recognized many times by Goodwill Industries in Austin, Texas for her excellent work ethic. She also won several awards at the Center in Houston for her quilting and caning abilities.
Vicky lived the last 30 years of her life in Houston near her sister, Mollie Merkle Megill. Through the years, all of her sisters, including Martha, Mollie and Mary Merkle Holliday were very involved and committed to Vicky's welfare and happiness.
Vicky is survived by 14 nieces and nephews and several grand nieces and nephews.
She was much loved by her family and will be dearly missed.
