Tommy Joe Wilson was born July 26,1946 in Hobart, Oklahoma to Abe and Hazel Keas Wilson. He entered into the presence of Jesus on February 22, 2024 after a lengthy illness.
Tommy grew up and attended school in Hobart, where he excelled in high school football, basketball and baseball, and he was named Male Athlete of the Year his senior year. He attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma on a football scholarship. After college he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was stationed in Hawaii and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
While working on a farm north of Granite, Oklahoma of his future father-in-law, he met Nancy Carol Babek and they later married. Over the years Tommy owned and operated a hay hauling business, a trucking company, and a janitorial business. However, it was his love of cooking and smoking meat where he turned a passion into a successful restaurant and catering company. Tommy truly enjoyed being in the kitchen and he treated each meal as an event to be slowly savored. During the last few years he spent many hours teaching his son T.J. his cooking techniques and recipes so the Wilson BBQ tradition can continue, and that tradition can be further continued by his grandsons as well.
Tommy enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing every day with his buddies, and watching Fox News. Many people called him friend but only a few had the blessing and pleasure of calling him Papa. He enjoyed his grandchildren so much and attended all their events regardless of how far he had to drive. Papa taught his grandchildren to enjoy a good meal, to collect lost golf balls and, most importantly, to love Jesus.
Tommy's love for Jesus was unwavering and in the later part of his life he devoted much of his time serving the church, including prayer meetings, Bible studies, and helping the youth on Wednesday night. He also used his cooking skills to help the youth department raise money and he spent countless hours cooking turkeys for the Thank You Jesus meal. However, his biggest service passion was Malawi (Africa) village of Ngodzi and his three mission trips there filled him with pure joy, unending smiles and unforgettable memories. Tommy deeply loved the people of Malawi and enjoyed telling stories from his time there.
