Thurman Brake

August 5, 1925 — July 23, 2012

THURMAN LEE BRAKE, SR., 86, formerly of Anadarko, was born August 8, 1925, in Holdenville, Oklahoma to Martin Luther and Lemma (Bailey) Brake. He passed from this life on Monday, July 23, 2012, at Glenhaven Retirement Village in Chickasha.
Thurman grew up and went to school in Calvin and worked with his family as itinerant crop pickers until joining the U.S. Army in 1943. He was in the Infantry and fought on Luzon Island. After that victory he stayed on and served in Police Action there until April, 1946. He returned to the United States and was discharged in November, 1946. He did farm labor when he returned home, and then in 1955 he went to for Western Farmers Electric Cooperative in Anadarko as a vehicle mechanic, then as substation maintenance before being promoted to superintendent of vehicle maintenance. He retired in 1988.
Thurman and the former Chowning Goucher were married in Anadarko on August 4, 1951, by Alvin H. Ogle, a Methodist minister. He and Mrs. Brake have live at the Glenhaven Retirement Village for the last few years. As long as he was physically able, he loved to fish, hunt and garden. He was especially fond of watching rodeos on television, and particularly enjoyed the bull-riding events.
Thurman was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Thurman, Jr., one brother, Truman Roy Brake, and one sister, Lenny Kidwell.
Survivors include his wife, Chowning, of Chickasha; two sons, Gerald Brake and wife Lois of Rush Springs, and Terrill Lynn Brake and wife Betty of Fort Myers, Florida; one daughter, Helen Marie Brake of Stillwater; 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many loving friends.
The funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, at Bethel Baptist Church, with the pastor, Glen Alley, Officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery under the direction of Steverson Funeral Home. Viewing at the Funeral Home will be Wednesday, until 9 P.M.
