Thomas Roderick Pope

Thomas Roderick Pope, Hobart, 83, passed away Monday, September 9, 2013 in Oklahoma City, OK. He was born May 31, 1930 in Sutton Nebraska to Conrad and Catherine (Reisbeck) Pope. Rod graduated from Sutton High School in 1948, where he lettered in football and basketball. He then went on to University of Nebraska and graduated in 1952 with a degree in Biological Science and a minor in English. He was drafted into the Army directly after college and went to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for two years. Rod was honorably discharged as a corporal.
He managed bowling lanes in Lawton, OK and Van Nuys, California. Rod won many awards in bowling including an Oklahoma State Team Championship in 1959. He worked for AMF in Chicago, IL traveling with professional bowlers and setting up bowling instruction classes.
On August 10, 1961, he married Pat Chapman.
Rod went to work for the Prudential Insurance Company in 1964 in Lawton, OK. He won many trips to conventions before being promoted to Sales manager and moving to Hobart, OK. His staff won many awards of excellence including two President's Citation awards. Rod served as the Life Underwriter Training Council Instruction several years. Rod retired from Prudential on February 15, 1990.
He began doing research after retirement. Rod was a member of The Oklahoma Chapter of Germans from Russia and a charter member of the Kiowa County Genealogical Society where he served as "official researcher" for the County and newsletter editor for ten years.
Rod also worked for Kiowa County Election Board for several years, and volunteered as Hobart's Santa Claus for four years.
He is survived by his wife Pat, of the home
two sons: Thomas J. Pope and wife Jonetta, Choctaw, OK
Jon Conrad Pope, Oklahoma City, OK
three grandchildren: Lauren, Adam, and Alex
two great-grandsons: Hunter and Braden
He is preceded in death by his parents, and one sister Patricia Pope.
Family will greet friends Thursday from 6-7 p.m. at Ray & Martha's Funeral Home
Funeral services: 10:00 a.m., Friday September 13, 2013 at Ray & Martha's Chapel, Hobart
Graveside rites will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Sutton Cemetery, Sutton, NE
with burial to follow.
