Sue Donna Tanequoot (Koye-Mah), 84, went to her Heavenly Home on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was born on January 28, 1939 in Lawton, Oklahoma to Yale Tanequoot and Mary Whitehorse Tanequoot, both deceased and was proud to be a full-blood Kiowa.
Sue grew up in Hobart, Oklahoma, graduating from Lawton High school in 1957. She was a lifelong member of the Elk Creek Baptist Church, now called First American Baptist Church in Hobart, Oklahoma. Sue moved to Los Angeles, California in 1958 on the U.S. Native American Relocation Program. Sue attended college at Los Angeles City College and Sawyers Business School. From 1958 to 1968, she started work as a secretary and eventually worked as a legal Secretary during her time in Los Angeles.
In 1969, she was hired as a Secretary with the U.S. Department of State - Foreign Service. She retired in 1997 as an Administrative Assistant after 28 years in the Foreign Service. Sue loved to travel. Her first assignment for the Foreign Service was in Brussels, Belgium where she worked for the Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy. Her Foreign Service assignments also took her to Tel Aviv, Israel; Rome, Italy; Mexico City; Madrid, Spain; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Saigon, South Vietnam. She retired in 1997 as an Administrative Assistant after 28 years in the Foreign Service. She then moved to Tulsa - next door to her sister Marlene - and lived the rest of her life there.
Sue served on the American Baptist Churches Native American Caucus for eight years and was a devoted member of the All Tribes Community Church of Tulsa. She was especially proud that she was ordained as a Minister in 2017.
Sue was a direct descendant of Principal Chief Tohausen, whose grandson was Charles Whitehorse, father of her mother, Mary Whitehorse Tanequoot. On her father's side she was a direct descendant of Chief Big Bow; Chief Heap of Bears and Chief Feather Lance.
