Servey "Vey" C Alonzo, a resident of Yarmouth, Maine, passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside early Friday morning, May 30, 2014, in Portland, Maine. He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, and grew up in Roosevelt, Oklahoma, graduating from Roosevelt High School where he set a school record by pitching the first no-hitter in Rough Rider baseball history. While in the United States Navy, Vey served five tours in the Vietnam War as well as time spent in Korea, serving on board the USS Midway, USS Lexington and USS Donald B. Beary and earned a Presidential Unit citation. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Vey earned his Bachelor's degree in accounting from the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico. He led a very diverse and joyful life raising horses and cattle on his New Mexico ranch, owning several small businesses, coaching the kids' chess club, and as an accomplished musician shared his love and knowledge of music with his children, family and friends. Before his retirement, Vey served as the CFO of an Electric Cooperative serving communities in northern New Mexico. In later life, Vey enjoyed traveling with his loving wife Linda, often in their RV, exploring as far as California all the way to Nova Scotia. They loved visiting with their abundant family and friends in states such as New Mexico, Arizona, Florida, Maine and Oklahoma. They also enjoyed the occasional cruise with family members as well. They lived together briefly in New Mexico and Florida before settling in Maine. Wherever he went, Vey always carried a tune with him, and his family was blessed with his wonderful singing and music over the years. His grandchildren fondly remember him teaching them to play Beatles tunes on the piano, and Vey loved singing them the song "Me and My Pony." In his early sixties, Vey enjoyed singing and playing guitar for an audience at an open mic night, a special treat for his family. Vey had many passions in life, including reading the bible, spicy food, horses, antique cars, fishing, and traveling. Vey was a kind and generous person to everyone who knew him. Vey is predeceased by his parents Adrian Alonzo and Cecilia Segura Alonzo; his brothers Michael and Adrian Alonzo; and sisters Dora and Marina Alonzo. Vey will be missed greatly by all who knew him, most especially by his wife Linda Innes Strout Alonzo; sister Lydia Alonzo (Flagstaff, AZ); brothers Domingo (Phoenix, AZ) & Paul Alonzo (Mexico); his daughter Rebecca Gomez and husband Frank Gomez, who was like a son to Vey (Albuquerque, NM); his sons Ricardo Alonzo (Jacksonville, Florida), Serbi Alonzo (Albuquerque, NM), and Romeo Alonzo (Albuquerque, NM); stepdaughters Carrie Nason and husband Clint Nason (North Yarmouth, ME), Melissa Walsh Innes and husband Shawn Walsh (Yarmouth, ME) and Michelle Turgeon and husband Matt Turgeon (Durham, ME). Vey's grandchildren, who will all miss him dearly, include Nina Gomez, Frankie Gomez, Harley-Quinn Alonzo, & Leonardo Alonzo; step grandchildren Joshua Nason, Jacob Nason, Molly Walsh, Clare Walsh, Sophie Walsh, Devon Turgeon & Dominik Turgeon. Vey was also blessed with his great grandchildren Monet Lucero, Autumn Lucero, and Frankie Gomez III. Vey also leaves behind his brother-in-law Jerome Innes, as well as brother-in-law Larry Innes and sister-in-law Donna Morin, both of whom were very close with Vey. Vey also had a close friend in Dick Dyer, as well as both Barbara and Chuck Trudeau, the two of whom were instrumental in Vey and Linda reuniting after 24 years apart. Vey also had many cousins and relations from his childhood in Roosevelt that were dear to him, including his cousin Gilbert Alonzo and his aunt Manuela Alonzo. He will also be greatly missed by his four legged companion Misty. Vey's family wishes to extend special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Kurt Ebrahim (Oncologist), Dr. Richard Lemay (Primary Physician), and VNA Hospice of South Portland. These medical professionals not only provided excellent medical care, but also provided an emotionally peaceful environment for Servey and his family.
