Funeral services for Samuel Elam (Sam) Hayworth will be held Tuesday, September 10, 2019, 2 pm at the First Baptist Church in Carnegie, Oklahoma. Hayworth, age 86, of Carnegie, passed from this life on Saturday, September 7, 2019.
Sam Hayworth was born near Clayton, New Mexico, on February 28, 1933. He and his brothers, Murray and Jerry, were raised north of Texhoma, Oklahoma, where their father, Enos Maltravis Hayworth and mother Mary Griffith, operated a farm and ranch. After graduating from Texhoma High School in 1951, he attended Panhandle A&M College in Goodwell, Oklahoma. It was there where he met and married his wife of 66 years, Ernestine Pollard.
After a two-year enlistment in the U.S. Army (1956-1958), Sam graduated from college in 1959 and began his public education career in a one room school in Holly, Colorado. He taught in the Anadarko (Oklahoma) Public Schools from 1960 to 1968 as an elementary science teacher and assistant principal. In 1968 he accepted the position of Junior High School Principal in the Carnegie (Oklahoma) Public Schools and ended his career back in the classroom as a science teacher in 1993.
Sam enjoyed traveling and passed on that joy to his two sons, Douglas and Gary. With both parents being teachers, summers were filled with camping adventures from the Rio Grande River to Alaska and most points in between. In retirement, he combined his love of travel with his love of serving others. As a volunteer, Sam travelled over the United States assisting in the construction and remodel of churches, parsonages and youth homes.
A big part of Sam's life was his dedication to the Royal Ambassadors youth program in the Baptist Church and Gideons International. Sam influenced countless lives in his 30 years working with boys in the activities of the Royal Ambassadors. He work tirelessly distributing Bibles and coordinating Gideon speakers for local churches for 30 years. Through these activities it is impossible to calculate the numbers of lives impacted by Sam's servant spirit.
He is survived by his wife, Ernestine, of the home; sons; Doug (wife Terri) of Anadarko, Gary (wife Terri) of Edmond; grandchildren Susanna Roberts (husband Anthony), Caroline Essex (husband Ryan), Benjamin Hayworth, Samuel Hayworth, Hunter Hayworth, Matthew Hayworth (wife Tessa) and Hannah Hayworth; great-grandchildren Camille Essex, James Roberts and baby Roberts.
