Ruby Hinds

February 28, 1919 — October 2, 2016

Ruby Evelyn (Hicks) Hinds was born February 28, 1919, in Franklin, Illinois, near Jacksonville, in Morgan County, to James Crockett and Laura Ellen (Fairchild) Hicks. She went to her eternal heavenly rest on Sunday, October 2nd, 2016, in Corn, Oklahoma at the age of 97 with her family at her side. Ruby attended Lone Tree School, four miles east of Cordell through the 4th grade. The family moved five miles southwest of Cordell and she attended Center Point School through the 8th grade. Ruby graduated from Cordell High School in May 1936. In May 1937 she attended Oklahoma Baptist University for 2 years taking business courses. While at OBU she was very active in the Sunday School and evening classes at First Baptist Church in Shawnee. She was a member of the Hatharean Social Club and Young Woman's Auxiliary mission groups on campus where she made many friends.

Ruby returned to Cordell and worked for several years in the abstracting business for local companies as well as being employed in the Washita County Treasurer's office.

Ruby married the love of her life Harlan Ray Hinds on August 31, 1941, in Cordell, Oklahoma with Rev. O.L. Bayless officiating. While Harlan served in the Army they resided in Goodman, MO at Camp Crowder. After the war was over they moved back to Cordell and he returned to work at the Cordell National Bank. Ruby and Harlan also farmed - raising cattle, wheat, and alfalfa. During this time two children were born: Elaine & Greg.

From August 1957 through October 2007 she and Harlan were appointed to serve as the official cooperative weather observers for the National Weather Service. They were given special recognition by the National Weather Service for 50 years of service. Ruby had a serving spirit and this was one of many ways she served her community.

Ruby was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cordell since 11 years of age. She was small in stature but was a mighty prayer warrior. She participated in the Sunbeam organization and for 25 years was the leader of the 4 & 5 year-old department. Throughout the years she was a member of several Ladies' Sunday School classes. Ruby will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Ruby is preceded in death by: her parents; her husband Harlan Hinds; Brothers: Bob and Verna Hicks; Herbert and Monnie Hicks; Elbert Hicks; Jimmy Hicks; Sisters: Leta and Wayne Hart; Stella and Lendon Martin; Brothers in law: Herman and Polly Hinds; J.W. and Imogene Hinds; Dennis Mincher.

Ruby is survived by: Daughter Elaine and Dale Kautz of Cordell, OK; Son Greg and Kim Hinds of Yukon, OK; 4 grandchildren Damon and wife Crystal Kautz of Cordell, OK; Jayme and husband Jeremy Roper of Yukon, OK; Nikkole Sullivan of North Augusta, SC; Matthew and wife Amy Schachle of Oklahoma City, OK; 11 great-grandchildren Jadyn and Makenzie Kautz, Merritt, Macey, and Madison Taylor, Matthew and Maddox Fuller of Cordell, OK ; Tori and Justyce Roper of Yukon, OK; and Paxstan and Paisley Schachle of Oklahoma City, OK. Sisters-in-law Ila Dean Hicks of Neosho, MO; Dortha "Dot" Mincher of Elk City, OK; Frankie and husband Leslie Hinds of Burns Flat, OK. As well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services for Ruby Hinds will be Friday, October 7, 2016, 10:00AM at First Baptist Church of Cordell with Rev. RB Mathis and Rev. Terrell Romberg officiating. Burial will follow at Lawnview Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Ray & Martha's Funeral Home of Cordell, Ok.
