Rose Marie Dobbs

May 11, 1927 — September 7, 2013

Rose Marie (Holman) Dobbs, Cordell, OK passed away at 86 years of age in her home of 57 years on September 7, 2013. Rose was born on May 11, 1927 in a one-room prairie dug-out to her hard-working, beloved parents, Millard and Dovie Holman.

Rose was one of 5 children. She and her siblings grew up in the gritty tumultuous time of the Dust Bowl and The Great Depression. Although she had little to nothing, she reflects fondly on her childhood. Some of her most vivid memories include the long three- mile walk to "Little Hope School" while her older sister Doris held her hand, rolling her knuckles the entire way. We all came to know the consequence for holding hands with Aunt Doris! She also often recalled "pulling bolls" in the cotton patch until her hands were blistered and her body was sore.

Rose grew into young woman as World War II came upon our nation. She had to say many difficult goodbyes to friends and family members as they headed off to war, but the most difficult of goodbyes was too a young man named James Dobbs. Their relationship grew through oversea letters, and once James came back from war they began their life-long romance. They were happily married on July 25, 1946.

James and Rose began their life on a farm near Rocky. In 1956, James and Rose built a house one mile south of Cordell. They would spend the rest of their lives in that house, raise their children in that house, spoil grandchildren in that house, and finally spend their last days in that house. She loved her home. Although nothing more than brick and mortar, Rose did what great mothers and grandmothers do. She made that house special to each of us.

Other than loving her family, Rose enjoyed sewing, writing, and cooking. Well, her grandson's probably enjoyed her cooking more than she, but she made them feel as though she loved it. She is famous in her large family for her quilting. She loved making her blankets and loved giving them away. They have become affectionately known as "Grandma Rose blankets", and you can guarantee there are a few of her family members going to bed underneath one each night.

Rose was tragically preceded in death first by her older brother, Buddy Holman, when his life was cut short at 33 years of age, and then her beloved daughter Mary Susan Dobbs, when she passed away at 9 years old. Two of the harshest moments in her life, and she admitted that she could not have made it with out the love of God to pull her through. She was also preceded in death by her lifelong best friends and sisters Doris Fite and Nina Dobbs. And lastly, in April of 2008, by her loving partner of 62 years, James Dobbs.

She is survived by one son, Larry Dobbs of Cordell, OK. Three daughters; Rita Giblet and husband Vance of Rocky, Ok. Paula Giblet of Oklahoma City, Ok. And Carman Young and husband Donnie of Rocky, OK.

She leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 26 Great grandchildren.

Rose Dobbs lived a full, and abundant life. She lived through waiting days for letters in the mailbox to instantly reading emails from friends in her inbox. She lived through riding a mule in the field to riding a jet through the sky. She will be missed, but we will rejoice as she is reunited with her Savior, her husband, and her baby!

Services will be Tuesday, 2:00 p.m. September 7, 2013 at Ray & Martha's Funeral Chapel, Hobart, OK. The family will arrive one hour early to visit with friends and relatives.
