Robert Place Montgomery, Jr.
Funeral services were held for Robert Place "Bob" Montgomery, Jr. Oct. 19, 2013 at Ray and Martha's Funeral Home in Hobart.
Mr. Montgomery was born May 2, 1932 in Hobart. He died Oct. 16, 2013 in Norman.
Mr. Montgomery served in the 245th Tank Battalion in the Korean Conflict, from 1950-52.
He was graduated from Hobart High School in 1950 and the University of Oklahoma with a BS in Engineering in 1957.
Passionate about his family, Mr. Montgomery loved America.
He was a pioneer in United States aerospace aviation beginning his career at Northrup in 1957, moving to Aerojet General in California in 1958.
He was instrumental in building rocket engines to be utilized for space exploration.
Hired by Brown and Root Northrup in 1966, Mr. Montgomery moved to Houston, Texas, to lead the Space Environment Simulation Laboratory at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
He contributed in the successes of the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Space Shuttle and the International Space Station programs.
Mr. Montgomery was the son of the late Robert Place Montgomery and the late Theitis Curreathers Montgomery.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Montgomery was preceded in death by his brother, John Denny Montgomery.
Mr. Montgomery is survived by his wife, Barbara Louise Jones Montgomery of the home; sons, Robert Place Montgomery III and wife, Anne Denise Montgomery, John Paul Montgomery and wife, Amy, and a daughter, Molly Zeitler and husband, Jon.
He is also survived by grandchildren, Robert Place Montgomery IV, Megan Anne Whobrey and husband, Zane, Graham Clark Montgomery, Myra Lee Luedecke and husband, Jacob, Katelyn Louise Montgomery, David Place Montgomery, Zoe Elizabeth Zeitler and Rebekah Elaine Zeitler.
Interment was in the Rose Cemetery at Hobart under the direction of Ray and Martha's Funeral Home.
