Nancy Hurt

February 20, 1934 — April 9, 2014

Nancy Kaye (Kelly) Hurt was born February 20, 1934 in Carnegie, OK to William Earl Kelly and Gwendolyn (Tooman) Kelly. She passed away early Wednesday morning, April 9, 2014, at the Carnegie Hospital with her family by her bedside. Nancy grew up in Carnegie and graduated in May of 1952. She attended Cottey College (an all girls junior college) in Nevada, Missouri for two years and then attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas for two years graduating in August of 1956. She married the love of her life Paul Kenneth Hurt on September 1, 1956. After Paul graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, OK, they moved to Vernon, Texas where Paul accepted his first teaching position. Nancy worked for the Soil Conservation Service in Vernon. In 1960 they moved to Lawton, Oklahoma where Paul taught Physical Education, coached various sports and did some refereeing. Nancy was a stay at home mother until her two children started school. She then went to work as an aide at Roosevelt Elementary School in Lawton. Nancy was very active in PTA at Edison Elementary School and was an active member of AAUW (American Association of University Women). In 1975 Paul retired from teaching and bought a salvage yard and wrecker service in Carnegie, Oklahoma, and moved his family back "home". In Carnegie Nancy worked for the local Peanut Company. She later went to work at the Caddo County Courthouse passing out food stamps at first and then later she worked as a secretary to one of the Caddo County Deputies. She retired in April of 2007. Nancy was a loving woman, with a gentle soul. She always put others first even until the end. She never had a cross word to say about anybody nor anything. She loved her family and especially her three grandsons (who lovingly referred to her as 'Picky'). She loved old movies especially musicals and Disney movies and she loved reading. Nancy loved her church - the First Christian Church in Carnegie - and her church family. She lovingly ran the cd player in church every Sunday.
