Mervin Lee Greb

October 15, 1925 — February 21, 2013

Mervin Lee Greb was born to Harry and Gettie Greb in Gotebo, Oklahoma on October 15, 1925 and died in Hobart, Oklahoma on February 21, 2013 at the age of 87. He attended elementary and middle school at Pleasant Valley School northwest of Gotebo. In 1943, he graduated from Gotebo High School where he was an honor student and athlete.
Upon graduation, he farmed with his father, Harry on the family farm near Gotebo. On July 30 1945, Mervin joined the US Army serving for seventeen months with the 383rd Military Police Battalion including service in Paris, France. Following his military service he returned to live with his parents and began to farm the Washita County land he purchased with money he saved while in the service.
He was united in marriage to Wanda Lou London at the United Methodist Church in Rocky, Oklahoma on July 30, 1949. Mervin and Wanda lived east of Rocky where he continued to farm with his father. To this marriage was born one child, Connie who was born in November 1950. Mervin and his family moved to Hobart in 1959 where he resided until his death.
He was an accomplished farmer and expanded his operation in Washita and Kiowa counties, where he raised wheat, cattle and cotton. He retired from active farming in 2005 but continued to remain involved in his farming operation. On one of his last visits to the farm, he drove past the Weber place in Washita County. He paused at a tree across the way and said, "that's my favorite tree" explaining how he would often park under its large shady branches to rest, eat lunch and plan his Sunday School lessons.
Mervin was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hobart for over fifty years where he served the Lord as an ordained deacon and in many other leadership capacities. He was a member of numerous pulpit committees and served as mentor to many young pastors.
At age 16, he began teaching Sunday School at the Salem Baptist Church of Gotebo. In 2012 he retired after seventy years as a Sunday School teacher. He was a self-taught scholar of the Bible and a gifted teacher who changed the lives of those who studied with him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Greb and mother, Gettie. He is survived by his wife, Wanda of the home; his daughter, Connie Greb Dillon and her husband, David of Norman; his granddaughter, Jennifer Dillon of Columbia, Missouri; a host of Greb, Schmidt, London, Griggs and Karlin relatives; and many treasured friends.
Mervin was a steward of the land and of the Lord. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He cherished his family, his many friends and the fellowship of the First Baptist Church. We will miss his passion for life, his strength of character, and his abundant generosity.
