Melford Eugene Slemp, 89, was born September 11, 1924, to Henry Clinton and Addie Mae (Warner) Slemp north of Gracemont. He passed from this life on Sunday, January 12, 2014, at his home surrounded by family.
Gene was born and raised on a farm in the Spring Creek area. He attended Star, Oakdale and Spring Creek schools. Gene and the former Mary Janell Fogle were married in November, 1947. He was in the army for a while during WWII for a time but was honorably discharged on a farmer's deferment. Gene and Janell loved and cared for all kinds of animals but mainly farmed and raised cattle. He also did custom baling for many other farmers in the area. Gene was a member of the Spring Creek Baptist Church, The Oddfellows Hall and was a school board member for over 20 years. Gene enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, Janell; siblings, Letcher Slemp, Clinton Slemp and Anna Hall.
Survivors include his two children, Gloria Jennings and her husband, Steve, Mark Slemp and his wife, Kim, both of Gracemont; four grandchildren, Dakota Slemp and his wife, Kylie of Gracemont, Ashley Schubert and her husband, Bronson of Yukon, D.J. Jennings of Mustang and Mike Jennings and his wife, Lacey of Gracemont; six great grandchildren, Brazyn Slemp, Brylee Schubert, Demi Jennings, Daphni Jennings, Sydney Thompson-Jennings and Carli Jennings; two sisters, Bernice Vandeventer of Gracemont and Mildred Leonard and her husband, Cotton of Weatherford; one brother, J.B. Slemp of Gracemont; special caregivers, Betty Robertson and Shirley Maze; other relatives and many friends.
