Mary Ellen Green Pewo, 67, passed away on January 14, 2020. Mary was born May 22, 1952 to Bernice Soontay and Edgar "Butch" Toehay. She was raised by her grandparents Howard Allen and Alice (Domebo) Soontay at the Dah-tah-hay allotment in Boone, OK.
Mary attended Boone School through the 8th grade and graduated from Apache High School in 1970. She attended Draughon's Business School in Tulsa, OK. She worked with various employers as a clerk at the Oklahoma City Police Department, administrative assistant at the Southern Plains Intertribal Center, was an administrative assistant and CHR at the Fort Sill Apache Tribe. She was an assistant and the Administrator for the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Inter-Tribal Land Use Committee.
She was a lifelong accomplished seamstress. At a young age, she made her own custom clothing. She loved outfitting her only granddaughter in custom clothing and tribal regalia. Sewing was her passion and she was known for her unique star quilts. Mary was an avid sports Grandma and loved watching Jasa play softball, Jeffrey play football and Braeden play baseball and basketball.
Mary and her late husband Dennis built their family home in 1981 in Apache, OK. She was a member of the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma and was also of Kiowa descent.
She is survived by her daughters and their spouses: Crystal and Jason Lightfoot and DeAnna Pewo and Brendan Jones. Her only granddaughter, Jasa Lightfoot and companion Dustin BigMountain. Her grandsons, Jeffrey "Boogie" Lightfoot and Braeden Jones; special niece Henrietta Redbone; her brother Jeffrey Toehay and his wife Candy; sister Joanna Redbone and her husband Sam; brother-in-law Donald Pewo and his wife Karen. Mary was very blessed with her siblings Kathleen Green, Geraldine Pike, Inez Bread, Lynn Key, Lyman Key, Opal Key Wright, Robert Key Jr, Rudolph Key, Lorraine Russell and McArthur Key, as well as her sisters Cheryl Redelk, Romelia Kassanavoid, Karen Kopaddy and Bertha Tahhahwah; Uncle Robert "Bobby" Soontay and his wife Inetta; and her beloved Aunts Nettie Soontay and Bertha Soontay Hogan. She dearly loved all of her cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and greats.
She is preceded in death by: husband, Dennis Pewo and their infant twin son and daughter; her Father Eddie "Butch" Toehay and his wife Roberta Pewo Toehay; her Mother Bernice Soontay Key and her husband Bob Key of San Carlos, AZ; Uncle whom treated her as his own Howard "Tony" Soontay; her sisters Jolynne Toehay, Leann Parker Smith, and Nadine Kaulay; Aunts Roberta Attocknie, Cora Tiddark; and Uncle Richard Soontay
