Mary Joyce Cowling

Mary Joyce Gunter Cowling,78, of Carnegie, OK passed away Saturday, November 26th, 2011 at the Carnegie Tri-County Municipal Hospital. Joyce was born August 24th, 1933 to Carroll and Flora (Powers) Gunter in Carnegie, OK. She was given the nickname "Cricket" by her uncle, which was later shortened to "Crick". She started school at Carnegie and later moved and completed her grade school education at Pleasant View. She started school at Alfalfa when she was a freshman, played basketball, softball and was in the junior and senior plays and graduated in May of 1951. She married Jimmie Joe Cowling, June 9th, 1951 in Oney, OK and lived on the family farm. Later they moved to California where their three children were born. In 1960, they returned to Eakly, OK and opened Cowling's Garage and later opening Eakly Cafe. Joyce had various jobs. She was employed at Sim's Grocery, Eakly School system, Eakly and Oney CO-OP. She was a very talented painter. After Jim's retirement they founded Signature Crafts. Jim did the woodwork and Joyce did the painting. They enjoyed traveling in their travel trailer to different craft shows and meeting new people. They were Square Dancers and members of the Hydro High Steppers. Some of her hobbies were her fish pond, and taking pond tours with friends. She also enjoyed rock hunting and going to garage sales. Her adventures included traveling to Arkansas with her sister Reta to visit Bryson and Cole who took her four wheeling. She enjoyed visiting her granddaughters, great grandchildren, and her grandson. Joyce was a member of the Church of the Nazarene and also the Prime Timers. She is greatly missed and loved by her family.
