Marvin Humphrey

February 19, 1921 — March 5, 2015

Marvin Forrest Humphrey was born to George and Ivy McDonald Humphrey on 19 February 1921, near Fay, Oklahoma. In the late 1920's, the family moved to Rocky where George worked in the wheat and cotton harvests. Marvin attended school through the 7th Grade at the Lone Star Country School. He worked in farming, wheat harvest and did mechanic work for W.O. Cannon for many years He married Audrey Elliot on October 20, 1938. Marvin was drafted into the Army in June of 1944, where he served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He served as a foot soldier in the Pacific campaign with Company F, 2nd Battalion of the 307th Regiment of the 77th Infantry Division overseas in Okinawa, Japan and the Philippine island campaign. He became Tech Sergeant with a machine gun squad, was awarded the Purple Heart, two Bronze Star service medals and the Philippine campaign medal. After he was discharged from the Army, he worked as a custom harvester and in farming, trucking and construction in the off seasons. He sold his combines and opened his own mechanic's garage a mile south of the Rocky Cotton Gin in 1961 and was open until 1967 when he went to work for Lindley Farm Equipment in Cordell where he worked until he retired. While he had his independent garage, many weekends in the summers were spent at either Lugert or Ft. Cobb Lake, camping, water skiing and fishing. After he retired he worked in his shop in Rocky for various farmers in the area due to his expertise in the Massey Ferguson hydraulic lift system. He spent many nights on the phone with do-it yourselfers coaching them on how to tear down a certain part or put it back together. In January 1991, his wife, Audrey, passed away after a long illness. After Audrey's passing, he traveled as much as possible. He loved Colorado and spent many days and nights camping near Pagosa Springs. He also took several of his grandsons along. On July 17, 1993, he married Nora Slaughterback Diffendaffer at his brother Elmer's home. He and Nora spent much of their time traveling and seeing the sights around Oklahoma and Colorado. Marvin enjoyed his grandkids. He loved all of them, loved to play with them and spend time with them. Many would marvel at him even in with his advanced age, when he would get down in the floor to play with the grandkids. He was preceded in death by his parent George and Ivy, his wife Audrey, one daughter Barbara, his two sisters Eula and Ruth, six brothers Donnie, Harold, Gene, Calvin, Elmer and Garold and wife Nora.
