Graveside service for Marilyn (Merlene) Mae Bointy Taptto Spottedhorse, 92, of Mountain View, Oklahoma will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Rainy Mountain Kiowa Indian Baptist Cemetery, with her nephew, George C. Carter, officiating.
Mrs. Spottedhorse passed away on Tuesday, July 13th, at Carnegie Tri-County Hospital.
She was born January 18, 1929, in Lawton to George Bointy and Bessie Meahkah Bointy. She was raised in Mountain View by her father's sister and husband James and Frances Bointy Taptto and therefore had two sets of parents.
At the age of 14, she was selected as the first Kiowa Tribal Princess title in 1943 to represent the Kiowa people in the American Indian Exposition.
She graduated from Mountain View High School in 1947. She married Cornelius Spottedhorse at Rainy Mountain Kiowa Indian Baptist Church in 1949.
She worked as a nurse aid at various nursing homes in Lawton, Walters and Mountain View. She attended Great Plain Vo-Tech Center in Lawton, Oklahoma and graduated in 1978 in the LPN program. She was employed at Carnegie Tri-County Hospital for 15 years and then Carnegie Indian Health Clinic until she retired in 2002. After retirement, she worked at the Kiowa Tribe AOA department. She loved to read, work crossword puzzles and watch her game shows. She enjoyed visiting with all her family, friends and especially her grand and great grandchildren.
Marilyn is survived by her children: Neil Spottedhorse and wife Janet, Mountain View; Gary Spottedhorse and wife Rebecca, Lawton; Richard Spottedhorse, Mountain View; Lana Spottedhorse, Oklahoma City; Lori Spottedhorse, Lawton; her sister: Barbara Roberts, Carlsbad, N.M.; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great, great grandbaby, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 54 years, Cornelius; daughter, Donna Spottedhorse; two sons, Myles Spottedhorse and Glen Spottedhorse; her sisters, Thelma Stumblingbear, Annette Bointy, Audrey Carter and Buena Jean Jones; her brothers, Thomas Keahbone and Byron D. Bointy; her grandson, Jason Spottedhorse and one granddaughter, Jillian Frances Randolph.
