Marietta Phillips

December 2, 1936 — November 21, 2020

Marietta was born on December 2, 1936 to Lige and Kate (Herron) Vincent near Colony, Oklahoma in an area called Ghost Mound. She was the first of 8 siblings. She was named after her two grandmothers, Mary Herron and Henryetta Vincent.

She attended school in her early years at Ghost Mound. The family moved to Eakly, Oklahoma where she finished high school. Chopping cotton and peanuts was not her favorite thing so she set out to get a college education. She earned a Bachelor of Science and a master's teaching degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

Marietta married Kenneth Dale Sullavan in1955. To that union three children were born: Greg Allen, Shelly Ann, and Kenda Kay. In 1960, Marietta and Kenneth lost Shelly Ann to an unknown sickness, Kenneth passed away in a car accident involving a drunk driver, and her last child was stillborn. She always said she never would have made it through but for taking care of Greg. Marietta had begun her teaching career in Sterling, Kansas going from there to Allen, Texas, Binger and Eakly, Oklahoma, and finishing her last 35 years teaching in Carnegie. As Marietta began her teaching career in Carnegie, she met and married Billy Phillips. They were married in 1962 and enjoyed 58 years together, working on their farms, teaching at Carnegie, raising Greg, and later on raising their granddaughter, Briana.

Marietta loved the Lord. She was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church where she taught young adults in Sunday School and cooked lunch for the Rotary Club for many years. She loved her family and friends. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and loved having them all by her side. She rocked many grandbabies. She loved being a teacher and never missed an opportunity to visit with former students.

Marietta said love was sacrifice as Jesus had sacrificed for us. She was always ready to help her family, her friends, and her church. She lived her life to the fullest. She said, "I'm ready to go, it'll be alright, I love you," to her family, and passed away on the evening of November 21, 2020 at the hospital in Tulsa from COVID-19.

She was preceeded in death by son, Greg Sullavan, daughters Kenda and Shelly, first husband Kenneth Sullavan, parents Lige and Kate Vincent, grandparents Joshua and Henrietta Vincent and William "Woody" and Mary Herron, brother Gerald Vincent.

Surviving Marietta is her husband, Billy Phillips of Carnegie, granddaughter Briana Johnson and husband Adam and their children, Zane, Ava, and Lily, grandson Russ Sullavan, siblings Frank, Bonnie and husband Neal Smith, Robert and wife Linda, Reuben and wife Sabrina, Reba and husband Dale Jackson and Debra Vincent, one sister-in-law Jenny Vincent, many nieces and nephews and many dear and special friends.
