Marian Merkey, 90, of Wellington, Kansas, formerly of Cordell, OK, passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington, KS.
Marian S. Merkey was born October 13, 1927 in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. At a very young age she was adopted by David and Elizabeth (Garman) Shearer. Marian graduated from Mt Joy High School in 1945. After graduation she worked for Elizabeth College and then for Continental Press where she became manager of one of the departments and worked there for 11 years. Jean Geyer, a very good friend of hers went to McPherson, KS for college where she met Esther (Merkey) Neher. Together, the 2 of them got Marian to start corresponding with Esther's brother, George Merkey who lived on a farm in Cordell, OK. They wrote letters to each other for some time and when they were finally able to meet, they fell in love and were married on November 12, 1961 in Mt Joy, Pennsylvania. George and Marian came back to Oklahoma where they lived with his parents until January 1962 when George had 2 rooms built of their home on a farm just east of Cordell, OK. They lived in those 2 rooms while he continued to build the rest of the house. George and Marian were faithful members of the Bible Mennonite Brethren Church in Cordell. Marian helped George on the farm and took care of the home and their children. There was always a big garden where many vegetables were grown. Many trips were made to the fruit orchards around Cordell and Marian spent many hours canning the fruits and vegetables from those. In her spare time she loved to work crossword puzzles and later on she loved to color. Marian loved reading her Bible and was a loving mother and grandmother. Marian lived on the farm until October 2012 when she moved to Wellington, KS to be closer to some of her children. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Marian is survived by her daughters Teresa Davis and her husband Mark of Putnam, OK; Sharon Kimbel of Wellington, KS; Judy Merkey of Wellington, KS; Brenda Penner and her husband Arlen of Hillsboro, KS; her son John Merkey and his wife Kathy of Wellington, KS; 11 grandchildren, Shasta Kimbel of Oklahoma City, OK, Tiffany Kimbel of Olathe, KS, Brandon Kimbel and his wife Kayla of Mulvane, KS, Amanda Penner, Josiah Penner, Ashton Penner, Rebeca Penner, Trevor Penner and Cambry Penner all of Hillsboro, KS, Amanda Jacobs and husband Josh of Arkansas City, KS, Mason Sparks of Wellington, KS; 2 great grandchildren Hagen Bittinger and Emerie Jacobs both of Arkansas City, KS, and a nephew James Shearer of Monroe, NC.
Marian is preceded in death by her husband George Merkey, November 6, 2003, and her adopted brother, Kenneth Shearer.
