Marguerett Jane Smith, 101 years, 3 months and 25 days old, of Cordell, Oklahoma, passed away on March, 11, 2025 at Corn Heritage Village in Corn, Oklahoma. She was born on October 16, 1923, in Carter County, southwest of Ardmore, Oklahoma to Edward Garnet Little and Maudie Lee (Bigham) Little.
Her childhood years were spent growing up in the Rocky, Oklahoma area and on the family farm south of Cordell, Oklahoma. She started to school at Little Hope School and attended there for one and a half years before moving to Lone Star School, where she graduated from the 8th grade. She then attended Rocky High School, graduating in May of 1943. On July 10, 1944, she married A F Smith in Hobart, Oklahoma. They farmed south of Cordell until 1949, at which time they sold their land and moved to Otis, Colorado. In 1952, A F began to preach the gospel. For 10 years, she served as the minister's wife in Wray, Colorado; Ogallala, Nebraska; Hydro, Oklahoma; Sterling, Colorado; and Lamar, Colorado. In 1962, the family returned to the farm south of Cordell to take over her father-in-law's farming operation.
Marguerett worked at Kellwood's in Clinton, Oklahoma for a few years, but her true passion was helping on the farm whenever she could. She cherished time with her grandchildren, often organizing sleepovers and cooking them spaghetti. She had a talent for sewing and loved making clothes for her granddaughters when they were young, frequently reminiscing about the dresses she made. Always keeping her hands busy, she crocheted bedspreads, created crocheted family names displayed in shadow boxes and made an array of pottery for "her girls." She also had a love for crocheting afghans and could often be found making one to gift someone special.
She loved hosting family dinners for birthdays, anniversaries, and any occasion that brought loved ones together for a meal. More often than not, the reason was simply that Dad had too much fish in the freezer, leading to fish fries that were enjoyed by many friends and family of the Smith house.
Her husband retired from the USPS on January 3, 1989, giving them more time to travel. For several years, her highlight was an annual trip to Webster, Wisconsin, where A F held a yearly gospel meeting, and she taught a class at the Burnett County church of Christ Vacation Bible School. Other memorable times, they would load up in the van with their good friends, Clayton and Gracie Boggs as well as Melvin and Mary Fern Woodruff, and set off to explore our great nation. In later years, with the purchase of a travel trailer, they enjoyed camping at Fort Cobb Lake and would spend several weeks there during the spring and fall, hosting family and friends.
Marguerett was an active and dedicated member of Northside church of Christ. She was always willing to help, exemplified by the weeks she spent working alongside fellow church members to provide meals at the church building for those affected by the tornado and ice storm in Cordell. In her later years, one of the things she missed most was being able to attend church. She deeply missed seeing her church family, hearing the singing, and feeling renewed each time the congregation gathered. She often shared this sentiment when visited by family.
Marguerett is preceded in death by her husband of 75 years, A F Smith; her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Andrew Franklin Smith and Cliffie Mae (Brunner) Smith; and her daughter, Patty Jo (Smith) Peterson. She is also preceded in death by her sisters, Beulah Hester and Gertie Sullins; her brothers, Garnett Little, Royce Little, Vaden Little; as well as several nephews, nieces and friends.
Marguerett is survived by two sons, Richard (Gene) Smith and wife Calla of Cordell, Oklahoma, and Terry Smith and wife Jeanne of Cordell, Oklahoma; one son-in-law, Gary Peterson of Hobart, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Steven Peterson and wife Natika, Amy Littau and husband Trey, Pamela Johnson and husband Will, Mindy McKeown and husband Matt, Lacey Brown and husband Steven and Ashley Griffith and husband Don; and eleven great grandchildren, Abby Littau, Emma Littau, Kylie Johnson, Callie Griffith, Raylan McKeown, Drew Griffith, Jenna Johnson, Jack Brown, Brock McKeown, Vadyn Peterson and Grant Brown.
