Manuel D. Urbina, 95, was called to his heavenly home on Sunday, September 29th, 2019, with his loving family by his side. He was born on December 27, 1923 in Phoenix, Arizona to Jesus and Mary (Golding) Urbina. His family left there for Southern Arizona when he was five years old. As a young man he worked in the lead mines at Bisbee, Douglas and Tombstone. When WWII began he was working in the lead mine at Tombstone collecting lead for artillery when he decided to join the Army and serve his country. While in the service, his tour of duty included: France, Germany and Belgium. During this time he fought in 3 major battles, one of them being the Battle of the Bulge. After the war ended, he was stationed at Fort Sill where he met the love of his life, Rita Joyce Guthrie. They were married on November 1, 1945 in Wichita, Kansas. They enjoyed fifty-nine wonderful years together before she passed away on December 6, 2004. After fulfilling his years of enlistment, Manuel served in the Active Reserves for the next six years. Soon after, he moved his family to Gotebo, Oklahoma where he began working for Finefrock Rock Crushing Plant. He retired from Dolese Brothers in January of 1986, and after retirement, Manuel began his own lawn mowing service working for twenty-eight years. He dedicated his life to serving the Lord. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gotebo, Oklahoma where he served as greeter and Sunday school teacher. Manuel became a resident at the Lawton-Fort Sill Veterans Center in April of 2016. On January 17, 2019, Manuel was honored by the 2nd Battalion 20th Field Artillery with 2 medals recognizing his devotion, patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the greater good of not only the American people, but the preservation of peace across the world.
