Loretta Mae Simmons

April 3, 1940 — July 10, 2023

Loretta Mae Simmons was born to Homer Scott and Elsie Agnes Elliott on April 3, 1940 and departed this life on July 10, 2023 at the age of 83 years and 3 months. She was raised on the farm North of Rocky, Ok with her sister Junetta. She was a very studious youngster who excelled in school. As she progressed in her education, she enjoyed Home Economics and became quite proficient at sewing with skills equal to a professional Tailor. At home she was quiet but enjoyed cooking, many times making the homemade noodles for Sunday dinner.
She attended Rocky School until 1957 at which time she married Kenneth Simmons on May 11 and moved to Cordell. Loretta completed her senior year at Cordell High School where she graduated as valedictorian of her class.
Her only daughter, Carrie, was born in July of 1958 and the family moved to Hobart for a short time. Loretta enjoyed motherhood and keeping the home.
Later she began a job working for an prominent attorney, Walter Foth, in Cordell who was willing to employ her with no previous professional or legal experience. She worked very hard to prove herself worthy of his trust. After his retirement, Attorney Waldo Emmerson acquired the law practice and she continued until he closed the business to pursue his career as Associate District Judge. Throughout her employment there, she was also responsible for updating and maintaining the law library at the Washita County Courthouse
She ventured into a new career at Fleming Abstract and Insurance in Cordell working for Merkle and Jean O'Halloran. Loretta learned the insurance business with the same proficiency as anything else she undertook. She was considered a valuable employee and continued her work there until the O'Halloran's retired and sold the business to a bank.
In her retirement years she was a proud Grandma, taking much joy in her grandchildren.
She attended their school events and on occasion, showing up to embarrass them. She would often times bring hats and sunscreen for them to wear at outdoor activities which they always declined. But, they can also remember her support and being the bringer of snacks, always healthy of course. Her older grandsons recalled a time that she put on a rubber Halloween mask of an old man with a hat and cigar. She quietly walked up behind them and when they turned around the screaming ensued.
There weren't many plants that Loretta didn't have extensive knowledge of and always had a beautiful flower garden and manicured yard. If she decided to grow a few vegetables it was very successful. One of her grandsons recalls that he has asked her advice many times over for his gardening endeavors.
Later on she found a new interest and pursued genealogy and family history. Like everything else, her research was very detailed and many hours spent in making sure everything was factual before It was recorded and put in a collection. It was all very fascinating to her and she could tell you very interesting stories about the information she had found. Loretta was happy to share the histories of families that she was acquainted and would put together large binders for family members that wanted them.
She was known for her quiet reflective nature. Sometimes if asked a question, she would take a few seconds and look off past you before giving an answer, making sure that what she told you was the correct information. Her memory and intelligence surpassed the average person. She could recall many experiences that had happened throughout her life, from childhood, through life as a young adult, mother, grandmother and her travels that many others had forgotten.
Loretta had a great love of God and her church. She was baptized into the Church of the First Born at the age of 12 and remained a faithful member until her passing. She studied the Bible and researched details and dates that she found to be important. If anyone in the family had a question relating to that, she could give an answer without hesitation.
She is survived by her daughter, Carrie Sutton of Cordell, Ok. Sister, Jan Laatsch, of Weatherford, OK. Four grandchildren, Logan Sutton and wife, Alexis of Cordell. Tanner Sutton and wife, Tiara, of Thomas, Ok. Owen Sutton and wife Bethany, of Bethany, Ok. Tawny Webb and husband, Tyler of Tulsa, Ok.
Ten great grandchildren, Meliah Sutton, Cayden and Tristan Pugh, Railee, Avery, Audrei and Lukas Sutton, Addie, Eli and Tycen Webb.
