June Stonum

April 27, 1925 — January 15, 2014

Angels greeted June Stonum at Heaven's Gate on Wednesday night, January 15, 2014, after 88 years of life on Earth. Her prolonged battle against the effects of West Nile Virus ended peacefully in the presence of those who loved her.
June was a lifelong resident of Anadarko; most of her life spent only about 10 miles from where she began life in Gracemont, OK. Born in Marlow, OK, to William and Bertie Garland on April 27, 1925; her family farmed around Gracemont for many years where June participated in the daily chores of farm life. Graduating from High School in Gracemont where she was active in 4-H and received honors both Statewide and Nationally, where at the age of 15; won a trip to the American Royal Farm Show in St. Louis, MO. Skills learned in 4-H became lifelong hobbies; seamstress skills allowed June, by choice, to handcraft most of her casual and business attire. Horticulture skills learned at school and on the farm were manifested in gardening, which was a love of nature which gave her great reward that lasted until her last days on Earth.
June began a career at the First State Bank in Anadarko in 1956, and with only maternity leave to raise her children, continued service to First State Bank until the end of 1996. She rose to the post of Vice President in 1981 and in 1983 was elected as a member of the Board of Directors.
She was married to Stan Stonum in 1953 and had two sons, Fon and Perry, who were born in1953 and 1959, respectively, and a daughter, Gemma, that preceded her in death in 1956. Stan preceded her in death in 1990, and her sons now reside in Texas and Oklahoma. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, who were the greatest joys in her life.
June was also a long time member of the Anadarko Presbyterian Church, where she was a Deacon and Elder of the Church.
June loved all things “Oklahoma†and was a student of Oklahoma history and lore, following significant events throughout the State. Her friends were always her greatest asset in life and many were faithful correspondents throughout her life. She will be missed by all that knew her.
Services will be at 1 p.m., at Memory Lane Cemetery on Friday, January 31, 2014.
