Joy Spicer Martin was born on February 19, 1942 in Claremore, Oklahoma to Doris (Jamison) and Levi Spicer. She passed away on March 15, 2019 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
She enjoyed baking, gardening and working with children. She was a proud member of the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma and a member of the Council House Friends Church in Wyandotte, Oklahoma. She married Vernie Ray Martin on December 14, 1974 in Fort Wingate, New Mexico. They were happily married until his passing in November of 1994. She attended and graduated from Drury College in 1964 in Springfield, MO with a Bachelors in Education. She started her work history at Intermountain School in Brigham Young, UT where she worked for six years. For four years she worked as a teacher at Chilocco Indian School in Chilocco, OK. In 1972 she received a Masters Degree in Education from Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, OK. She continued her long history of teaching, supervising and administrating with two years as a teacher/supervisor at Ft. Wingate High School in Ft. Wingate, NM, fours years as a teacher/supervisor at Sherman Indian High School in Riverside, CA, four years in the Office of Indian Education Programs in Sacramento, CA, twelve years in the Office of Indian Education Programs in Washington D.C. and September 1996 to her 2012 retirement as Education Program Administrator in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where she resided until 2013 when she moved to Anadarko, Oklahoma.
