Lifelong Caddo County resident John Thomas "J.T." McCasland Jr., 84, of Anadarko, passed away after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024 at his home in Anadarko with his beloved family at his side.
He was born May 16, 1939 in Anadarko to John Thomas and Ruby Vivian (Taylor) McCasland. J.T. attended Anadarko schools, and graduated with the Anadarko High School Class of 1956.
He farmed in the area until 1957 when he attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford for one year. Returning to Anadarko, J.T. began working for Anadarko Bank & Trust in 1958. He worked 25 years for the bank.
He and the former Virginia Lee "Ginger" Smith were married May 26, 1961 at the Chickasha First Baptist Church. In 1983, he went to work for the late Caddo County Clerk Jack VanDeventer as a purchasing agent. When VanDeventer retired, J.T. took over the duties as county clerk. He was elected to the position and served as Caddo County Clerk for 12 years before retiring.
J.T. served his community as a member of the Anadarko City Council, and was Mayor of the City of Anadarko from February 2006 to April 2007. He was also a longtime member of the Anadarko Lions Club. Some of J.T.'s hobbies included working in his yard and garden, camping and woodworking. He loved country music and playing steel guitar.
He was well-known for his love of Christmas and his light displays. He found joy in the faces of those young and old who would stop to admire his Christmas lights.
J.T. never met a stranger. He adored his loving wife of 62 years, his sons and their spouses, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Anadarko.
He was preceded in death by his: parents, John & Ruby; one sister, Betty Ann Watkins.

Eight great-grandchildren: Serenitee McCasland, Jaylin Ross, Peyton Ross, Kenneth McCasland, Nathaniel Freie, Dru Cox, Cameron Cox and Brielle Freie
One sister: Sharon Caddel, Caldwell, TX
One sister-in-law & husband: Jo & Bill Johnson , Troy, TX
Honorary daughter: Kari Burks & husband, Tracy and family
