Jo Ann (Jan) Chapman entered into Glory on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the home of her daughter
in Lewisville, TX. She was born November 13, 1940, in Hastings, Nebraska to Joe Houp and Marguerite
Ingrahm Houp. Jan spent her early childhood in various locations throughout Nebraska and Texas, but
came to live in Carnegie, Oklahoma when she was 10 years old due to her mother returning to her
ancestral hometown.
Jan was a Carnegie High School Graduate of 1958. She married Noel Don Chapman in December of that
same year. After years of travel due to wheat harvest and building highways for the state of Oklahoma,
they eventually settled in the Dallas area where they lived for the next 48 years. They returned home to
Carnegie in 2019.
Throughout their marriage, Jan and Don were living examples of the commandment of Christ to love
your neighbor as yourself. Their home was a Refuge for many over the years. During the earlier years in
their marriage, they provided a place for troubled youth who needed a place to land and gave
temporary housing to homeless families and individuals. In 1980 Jan and Don got involved in helping
with the refugee crisis of the "boat people" of Vietnam and Laos. They sponsored hundreds of refugees
during this time, helping them to embark on a new life in the United States.
After raising their own family of two biological children and six adopted children, their desire to serve
others never diminished. Although they no longer gave homes to the homeless, they used their home
to provide space for a food pantry that provided nourishment for countless people in their community in
Anna, TX.
Jan was a beloved Mom to her own children, a loving Gram to her grandchildren, and Mama Jan to the
many other children that she loved and taught, not only English, but also about her savior Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband Noel Don Chapman, her parents, and her sister, Juanita. She
is survived by her children - David, Shannon, Michael, Teresa, Linda, Tim, Julie, and John as well as her
grandchildren - Tori, Alex, Brianna, Mia, Levi, Sofie, Danielle, Brandon, Kevin, Nathan, Vivian, and JD.
Jan will be laid to rest in the Alfalfa cemetery, next to her beloved husband of 62 years.
