Iva R Hunter

April 19, 1919 — February 1, 2018

Iva Rose Hawzipta-Taylor Hunter, 98 years young, member of the Kiowa Tribe, Kiowa Name: A-Oie-On-Mah. Meaning "She's Coming Back," walked into the Heavenly Kingdom the morning of February 1, 2018 at 6:18 am., with her loved ones at her side. Iva was born on April 19, 1919 to Joe and Lucille (Hawzipta) Taylor in Anadarko, Oklahoma.
She attended Riverside Indian School and graduating from the very first class in 1939. She was recognized for being in the very first graduating class of Riverside, where she learned many life values. She was very proud of her education. After graduating high school, she went on to college in Chickasha, where she, received her Associates from: The Oklahoma Industrial Institute and College for Girls (OIICG), which is known today as USAO. She also attended Haskell Institute in Lawrence, KS. After school, Iva became the first chef in Anadarko and cooked at many restaurants in the area such as Service Café, White Dot, Mint Grill, Black Beaver and many others.
She was a member of Ware's Chapel, Hog Creek, OK; where she attended along with her children and grandchildren for many years. She was a Christian lady who enjoyed church, gospel singing, and tribal hymn singing.
She married Richard Hunter Sr. in 1942 and made her home in Anadarko.
Her home place was south of Apache Y where she helped raise her siblings and many Riverside kids. One of her favorites she always talked about was Donna Jean Tsatoke.
She was very proud mother who loved supporting her sons who served in the military. Michael Hunter U.S. Navy and three sons who all served in Vietnam: James (Jackie) Hunter USMC, the late Dennis Hunter US Army, and the late Leon Porky Hunter USMC. She was a member the Kiowa War Mothers, Kiowa Black Leggings Auxiliary, and supporter of the Vietnam Veterans Association.
Iva was 98 years old, and a very proud member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma.
She is survived by: 4 daughters, Kerol Ware of Anadarko, Oklahoma
Gayla Sue Ahtone of Ardmore, Oklahoma
Judith A. Hunter of Anadarko, Oklahoma
Karla Forbes of Mobile, Alabama
4 sons: James "Jackie" Hunter of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Terry L. Hunter of Anadarko, Oklahoma
Michael Hunter of Edmond, Oklahoma
Robert Alexander of Maryland.
