Herbert (Herbie) Mara Bynum was born on July 2, 1940 in Hobart, Oklahoma to Jody and Lucille Bynum. He passed away January 18, 2025 in his home in Hobart, Oklahoma at the age of 84. Herbie grew up in Hobart with his parents and four siblings, Curtis Bynum, Gaylene Bynum Schmidt, Kenny Bynum, and Pat Bynum Zacharias. He fiercely loved his siblings and remained close to them his entire life. Herbie graduated from Hobart High School in 1959. He was a member of the Bearcat football team and had a lifelong passion for Bearcat and Sooner football. Herbie was a talented carpenter and contractor. He built many of the newer homes in Hobart with his brothers, Curtis and Kenny. He created all of the beautiful, built-ins you see in Ray and Martha's Funeral Home with his own two hands. He and his brothers also built the First Lutheran Church in Hobart, Oklahoma. One of the highlights of his career was building General Tommy Franks' beautiful home. Even though that was the Bynum Brother's last big project, he continued to build and do jobs for people in the Hobart area until his last days. He was never truly retired, just continued to do jobs until the end. He was a hard working, honest man. Many of the people in town continued to call him, because he was the best of the best.
Herbie was a proud and active member of the First Lutheran Church in Hobart, being a faithful member since 1963. Herbie married Janet Mintz on November 18, 1963. They were married at the Lutheran Church in Vernon, Texas. They welcomed two children, Jeffrey Bynum in 1964 and Christy Bynum in 1966. Herbie and Janet were married for 61 years, until his passing.
