Erlene Hancock

July 31, 1928 — February 15, 2018

Erlene Hancock was born to Herman and Wilma Millwee on July 31, 1928 at Prairie Lone, a small farming community located between Carnegie and Fort Cobb which actually no longer exists. Erlene attended school at Prairie Lone through the 8th grade, transferring into Carnegie to complete high school. She graduated from Carnegie High School in 1946.

She met Dorothy Zimmerman when transferring into Carnegie who became a lifelong best friend, as well as serving as her maid of honor during her wedding to Ermel Hancok on September 16, 1947.

To this marriage four sons were born, Doyle, Dale, Gary, and Danny.

Erlene's lifelong dream was to be a teacher. After pretty much raising her boys she was able to finish her teaching degree at SWOSC in the spring of 1967. Her teaching career began with two years in Anadarko and finish with another thirty-four years at Carnegie. The majority of her career consisted of teaching Jr. High Math.

During her years in Carnegie, she was active with FFA Mothers, Band Mothers, PTA, Carnegie Mother's Club as well as her Oklahoma Teachers Association.

Her second calling was being a grandmother. She would drop everything if the opportunity to watch or spend time with the grandchildren came up. Her five grandchildren, Billy Jack, Brittney, Dayton, Hilary, and Dru Ann each have grand memories of special times spent with grandma, ranging from campouts in the cellar to driving lessons in the country at the age of ten.

Erlene was devoted to her First United Methodist Church through serving as a teacher to Executive Board Member. She was always on hand with a couple of pies or a cake for the various church dinners.

After Ermel's death, it became apparent to those of us around her that she had relied much more on their partnership than we realized. For a time, she had a hard time moving forward without him. They complemented each other in many more ways than we had realized.

She was devoted to the Hancock Family; enjoyed the camaraderie of her sisters in law. She seldom missed a Hancock get together of any kind. The annual reunion originally held in the Wichita Mountains was always a high-light of her year.

After her boys were grown, she and Ermel enjoyed dinner theaters as well as trips to Colorado with family. Her love for family was inclusive and unconditional.

In 2005 Erlene moved into the Corn Nursing Home. From that time her memory began to slip. She had always said that if her memory left, to remember the happy times, the laughter, the bright days. She had a life full of wonderful memories, a life well lived.

She leaves behind, sons Doyle and wife Glenda, son Dale and wife Donna, son Gary and partner Jeff Salazar, grandchildren, Billy Jack, Dayton, and wife Andrea, Brittany, Hilary, and Dru Ann. Great Granddaughter Blaine Hancock. Also two sisters, Joan Patterson and Doris and husband Carl Knauss... Three brothers, Ivan Millwee, Carl and wife Pat Millwee and Bill and wife Carol Millwee. Brother and sister-in-law, Randal and Juanita Hancock. Numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her husband Ermel, son Danny, parents Herman and Wilma, and two brothers Roy and Don Millwee.
