Emma Joy Phy

April 2, 1937 — January 21, 2021

Emma Joy Phy, 83, was born on April 2, 1937 to Travis and Leatrice (Bouggous) Phy in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Joy accepted Jesus into her life as a young girl and passed into His arms on January 21, 2021 at Integris Hospice House in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Joy attended school at Choctaw Public Schools for nine-and-a-half years before graduating from Midwest City High School with the Class of 1955.

Joy was a creative, talented, and hard-working mom. She attended Beauty School beside her brother while raising two young children. This later led to her opening up her own beauty shop in Mountain View, Oklahoma. Joy was the secretary at Mountain View Elementary School. She also took art classes at Southwestern Oklahoma State University which led to the opening of Joy's Arts and Crafts. Joy was a beautiful painter, so much so that she would teach classes to others. Joy's eye for the beautiful and creative never waned. Joy was able to see the beauty in many things. This included the hand prints of a grandchild whose fingerprints she left on her dresser mirror for well over a year just to admire them.

Joy's grandson called her "the basket grandma" because she sold Longaberger baskets, even visiting Longaberger, Ohio where the baskets were created. She love the artwork in each individual basket and could sense that each one would end up an heirloom to be passed down from one generation to the next. She gifted her family many beautiful baskets.

Joy traveled the United States of America with her children, Barry and Nora, setting up home wherever Buddy's construction/welding job took them. During this time, many fun times were had by the family.

Joy was a wonderful cook, but she liked to say, "I collect cook books, just don't cook". She often said she could make a flop of any "no-fail" recipe.

Joy went to work in the bookstore at the Caddo Kiowa Career Technology Center an met a trucker named Ralph Bufkin. They immediately hit it off and shared twenty years of love and happiness, and teasing one another.

Joy is survived by her husband, Ralph Bufkin of the home; one son, Barry Bessinger and his wife, Dana of Stillwater, Oklahoma; one daughter, Nora Welch and her husband, Kent of Hobart, Oklahoma; three grandsons, Dustin Welch and his wife, Angela, Travis Bessinger, and Jay Bessinger and his wife, Natalie; one granddaughter, Amber Tepe and her husband, Jerry Paul; ten great-grandchildren, Jerra Jo Tepe, Mason Tepe, Levan Tepe, Peyton Welch, Landyn Welch, Ashlyn Welch, Kamden Bessinger, Braylee Welch, Samuel Bessinger, and Baby Boy Bessinger on the way!

Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Travis and Leatrice Phy; brother, Donald Ray Phy; sister, Norma Lee Skaggs; grandson, Dallan Welch.
