Edward L. “Speedy†Hurt, 87, formerly of Anadarko, was born April 10, 1927, in Addington, Oklahoma to Edward Leveene, and Delphia (Sewell) Hurt. He passed from this life on Tuesday, June 4, 2014, in Edmond.
Speedy grew up in the Altus, Oklahoma area. He was raised by a single mother and many uncles and aunts. Speedy lived on their farms and acquired many practical skills.
As a young man, he was very active in sports. Speedy was well known for his athletic abilities. It was in basketball that he acquired the name “Speedy.†In 1943, Speedy quit school and joined the U.S. Navy. After being honorably discharged as Seaman 1st Class in 1946, he completed his senior year and graduated from Altus High School. Speedy and Orlena Weber were married on December 7, 1951. He owned and operated an Apco station in Anadarko for 21 years. Speedy was a big racing fan and sponsored a stock car for many years. Later, he and Orlena worked together in a retail western store. After that, Speedy worked at the Anadarko Public Schools greenhouse (his favorite job) until his retirement.
He loved tinkering with motors and building things. Speedy greatly enjoyed the friends he had made from a lifetime of working with the public.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Orlena of Edmond; his daughter, Lisa Stroble and her husband, John of Edmond; three grandchildren, Robbie Stroble of Pasadena, California, Lindsay George and her husband, Mical of Edmond and Nathan Stroble and his wife, Rachel of Edmond; two great grandchildren, Teagon and Maddox George, both of Edmond; other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be at 2 P.M., Saturday, June 7, 2014, at the Anadarko First Assembly of God with former pastor Don Stewart officiating and Pastor Roger Reston assisting. Burial will follow in the Memory Lane Cemetery. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.steversonfuneralhome.com .
