Drake Carter Cully, 54, was born on January 4, 1967 in Anadarko, Oklahoma. Drake was an enrolled member of the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma. He was also of Comanche, Seminole, and Creek descent. He was given the Kiowa name "Hon-ahn Ah Bow Ma" (meaning: you never get to see him) by his dad, Burgess Tapedo. Drake passed away on February 16, 2021 at his home in Carnegie, Oklahoma.
Drake grew up most of his life in Carnegie, Oklahoma. He graduated from Carnegie High School with the Class of 1985. Drake played football for the Carnegie Wildcats and was even named to the all-district and all-area teams in both his junior and senior years. After high school, Drake attended Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence, Kansas where he made many lifelong friendships.
Drake enjoyed going to dances and powwows, singing at the drum, making drumsticks, and beadworking. He was asked to be head singer on several occasions as he was always willing to help out. Drake was very close to the Sheridan family from Macy, Nebraska and sang with their family drum group, Standing Eagle, from time to time.
Drake is survived by four brothers, Rex Cully and his wife, Jami of Lawrence, Kansas, Brady Tapedo of Lawrence, Kansas, Dean Tapedo of Lawrence, Kansas, Mike Lewis and his wife, Becky of Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters, Freda Gipp and her husband, Al of Lawrence, Kansas, Darryl Monteau and her husband, Maurice of Lawrence, Kansas; one uncle, Louis Maynahonah Sr.; three special aunts, Martha Koomsa, Wilda Koomsa, Peggy Maynahonah; many nieces and nephews.
Drake was preceded in death by his parents, Burgess and Milicent (Maynahonah) Tapedo; biological father, Joe Cully; brother, Lance Cully.
Visitation will be on Sunday, February 21, 2021 from 4:00pm-8:00pm at Ray and Martha's Funeral Home in Carnegie, Oklahoma.
Graveside services for Drake will be at 11:00am on Monday, February 22, 2021 at Tanedooah Family Cemetery in Carnegie, Oklahoma. Officiating will be Rev. Woodrow Wilson and Rev. Julienne Judd. The family asks that everyone in attendance wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines. Under the direction of Ray and Martha's Funeral Home in Carnegie, Oklahoma.
