Dixon Dale Hubbard, 83, of Cordell passed away surrounded by family Thursday, June 8 at Clinton Hospital after a sudden illness. Dixon was born May 13, 1934 to Dale and Veda (Dixon) Hubbard in Dill City, Oklahoma. He graduated from Cordell High School in 1952, and went to Oklahoma A & M College to study Animal Husbandry. He graduated from Oklahoma A & M in 1956 with a bachelor's degree in Animal Husbandry, from Oklahoma State University in 1958 with a master's degree in Animal Husbandry and in 1960 with a doctorate of philosophy in Animal Nutrition, a nice accomplishment for a Cordell boy whose college chemistry teacher told him he wasn't college material and should go to vocational school.
Dixon had a lengthy and successful career in agriculture and cooperative extension at Panhandle State University; Texas A & M University Cooperative Extension Service in Lubbock, Texas; and the United States Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC. He received countless awards from agricultural organizations such as the Beef Improvement Federation honoring his work. They named him a pioneer in improving the quality of beef in the United States. His work allowed consumers to get beef that would be the same quality around the country. So, when you eat your next steak, you can think of Dixon Hubbard. He was also active in 4-H, livestock judging, meat judging and always wanted people to be aware of where their food originated. His training also led him to be an expert meat carver to help it taste just right, so if you cooked meat Dixon had his favorite knife ready to slice it, and you should probably step out of the way.
On August 29, 1954, Dixon married Patty (Cain) Hubbard. They had three children, Dale Keith Hubbard and his wife Melanie of Cordell; Malinda Reynolds and husband Herb of Montgomery, Texas; and Dan Hubbard of Montgomery, Texas. Dixon loved his family, especially his eight grandchildren: Rachel (Hubbard) Smith of Edmond, Okla.; Mary Ann (Hubbard) Shepherd of Yukon, Okla.; Clinton Hubbard of Centreville, Virginia; Amanda (Reynolds) Smith of Conroe, Texas; Danielle Hubbard of Oklahoma City; Kelli (Reynolds) Wohlgemuth of Conroe, Texas; Cain Hubbard of Spring, Texas; and Seth Hubbard of Hydro, Okla. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren who brought him so much joy Alex Smith, Rafe Smith, Camdyn Hubbard, Charlotte Rose Collado, Jace Hubbard, Beckham Hubbard and Rowe Smith.
Dixon was baptized into Christ March 31, 1946 at the Cordell Church of Christ. He was committed to the Lord's work and served as an elder leading and shepherding the congregations in Manassas, Virginia; Frederick, Maryland and Cordell, Oklahoma. He was an avid student of the Word throughout his life. He was committed to the Lord's work though mission trips to Ukraine and work with the High Plains Children's home, which always held a special place in his heart. He would count his work for the Lord as the most important.
