Darrell Monroe McCurdy, of Hobart, Oklahoma, passed away at home on Saturday, March 22, 2025. He was born on October 23, 1942, as the youngest of nine to Ida Mae Maxwell and Samuel M. McCurdy, in Carnegie, Oklahoma. Darrell grew up in Gotebo while delivering papers and picking cotton, before graduating from Gotebo High School in 1960. He then worked at Tomas Market in Hobart before joining US Air Force for 23 years, serving tours in many different places, including Okinawa, Vietnam, Hawaii, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Darrell was very proud of and raced his 1965 LeMans Blue Corvette. While in Hawaii, he met the love of his life, Myrna Pineda Samson, and she was a wonderful housewife to him and their sons. As a family, they loved to participate in chili cookoffs and going bowling. After retirement from the Air Force in 1985, he went to Holy Angel University in the Philippines and graduated with a degree for Liberal Arts with a major in Political Science. Darrell retired to San Antonio in 1987 and worked for USPS for 10 years. He moved to Hobart, OK after 2004 to get away from the city life. While he was retired, he would often lend a helping hand if asked, including American Legion, VFW, and Lion's Club. Darrell would often visit the nursing home to keep the residents company. In his spare time, he liked to buy and work on cars, but he was always busy with his own or other people's projects, often saying yes when they needed help. Darrell was also a collector of many things. He was named the Hobart Citizen of the Year in 2017. Darrell also received the Pat Shurley Outstanding Service Award, OK Lions District 3SW in 2019. He also helped with several Gotebo school class reunions from 2010 to his passing. Darrell will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
