CHOWNING BRAKE, 80, formerly of Anadarko, was born December 5, 1931, in Corn, Oklahoma to Earnie A. and Martha (Heubert) Goucher. She passed from this life on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at the Glenhaven Retirement Village in Chickasha, Oklahoma.
Chowning attended Ghost Mound School for a while until the family moved East of Gracemont. She obtained her G.E.D. many years later (an accomplishment of which she was very proud). Chowning married Thurman Brake, Sr. August 4, 1951 in Anadarko. She was a professional seamstress and worked from her home until 1977 when she went to work for Washita Valley Crafts. Chowning later worked for Red River Stitchery, for Cecil Burns at the Calico Patch and for the Settle's at the Bridal Shop until her retirement.
Alterations, sewing and crafts were some of her favorite things. She dabbled in upholstery, did some quilting and a little crocheting. Chowning loved cooking and having all the family over for Sunday dinner. Later on, she even let Thurman do the cooking.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Thurman, her son, Thurman, Jr. and her infant brother, Ira.
