Leroy Merritt was born to Floyd and Alfreda Merritt on January 19, 1945, in Carnegie, Oklahoma. Leroy attended Carnegie High School and college in Weatherford while working with his father custom combining, and later worked in Carnegie for Puckett's Grocery, Gene's Grocery, J.V.'s Food store, and finally managing Al's Thrifty Way from 1972 to 1976. Leroy married Brenda Dickenson on December 3, 1977 in Las Vegas Nevada. The couple moved to Pratt, Kansas where they managed a convenience store. They moved to Kinsley, Kansas where Leroy was Vice President of the store chain and supervised up to thirteen stores in Kansas and Oklahoma. They moved back to Carnegie to retire in 2001.
Leroy loved the Lord, listening to gospel music, rock n' roll, country western, and especially liked Elvis, Hank Williams, Dolly Parton, Buddy Holly, The Beach Boys, The Messengers, Jan and Dean, and other classics. He enjoyed watching all Sooner sports teams especially OU football, basketball, softball, and baseball. In his prime, he was an avid fisherman and excelled at rock cutting crafts. Leroy loved to talk with friends, sharing stories of his youth and faith, and keeping in touch with his family and friends in social media. He loved Jesus and served him with all of his heart.
He is survived by his wife Brenda, brother Larry, daughters Diana and Dawn, son in law Tony, and son Shaun. Leroy has 8 grandchildren: Chase, Jessica, Sarah, Holly, Alexandra, Kianna, Gabe and Jairus and 11 great grandchildren: Trinity, Dillan, Raegan, Javon, Jaselyn, Bohdi, Aly, Avery, Urban, Jackson, Taytum and Madilynn. Leroy was preceded in death by his daughter Beth.
