Carol Dean (Weigandt) Battles was born to Viola and Herman (Shorty) Weigandt on February 21, 1936 in Hobart, OK. Carol graduated from Gotebo High School in 1954 as salutatorian. In high school, she played basketball, played saxophone in the band and was the catcher for the 1953 softball state runner up team. After high school, Carol attended Southwestern State College (Southwestern Oklahoma State University). It was at Southwestern where Carol met her future husband, the love of her life, Haydon Battles. They married August 18, 1957 in Weatherford, OK. Their love and family grew over the years, and 67 years later their family has grown from 2 to 25, including 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Carol was a stay at home mom who worked from sun up till way into the night, stretched the budget to feed and clothe 4 kids on one salary, and kept everyone sane with one bathroom for 6 people and no washer and dryer. Carol and Haydon raised their family in the same farmhouse Carol grew up in. Visiting the farm and being with Nana and Papa was a favorite activity for all the grandkids (and other family members).
Carol Dean was involved in many church and community activities, including church board member and secretary for the library board. She supported Haydon and her children in all that they did. Along with her sisters, Carol was a master garage sale planner in multiple states and could pack a car like a Jenga master.
She was the heart of the family. Carol was Nana to not only her grandchildren but to many other children within her family and beyond. She is known for her grandchildren not wanting to leave the farm after a visit, her chocolate cake with peanut butter/chocolate frosting, and keeping food items way beyond their expiration date.
Nana was a premier nurturer and care giver who influenced many lives. She was the best big sister, daughter, wife, mother and Nana that we could have wished for. She and Haydon were inspirational role models for their children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Mom left a legacy of love, caring, faith, and wisdom for the future. We cannot begin to tell you how much she will be missed but due to her teaching us about love and faith, we know where she is and it is well with our souls.
