Boone Douglass Hazlette was born on September 18, 1929 to Boone Douglass Sr. and Gladys Hazlette in Duncan, Oklahoma and entered into eternal rest on December 5, 2021 in Dallas, Texas.
Boone was of Blackfoot heritage and was a member of the Caddo Nation. He grew up in Duncan and was the quarterback on the 1946 Demon football team. Boone attended the University of Oklahoma on a track scholarship from 1947-51. There he became ATO fraternity brothers with Joe Hancock, Sam Simon and Ray Dixon. Sam introduced Boone to Louise Ratliff of Hobart and a 70-plus year love affair ensued.
Boone and Louise were married in Hobart on November 24, 1950 and recently celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary. Their last Thanksgiving was a great day with family and friends, highlighted by several of Boone's perfectly-timed quips that entertained the group. To their union were born two beautiful daughters, Cindy and Kathy, both proud HHS graduates.
After graduating from OU Boone served alongside his cousin Tommy Gray during the Korean War. He was a First Lieutenant, serving in South Korea for 11 months in 1952-53. Upon returning Boone joined Louise and the girls in Hobart and opened Boone's Shoes, which was a Southwest Oklahoma institution for almost 30 years. Boone's exquisite taste in styles and friendly personality attracted customers from many miles around to shop in Hobart. He expanded his entrepreneurial skills through women's clothing stores in Weatherford and Stillwater.
In 1973, Boone joined U.S. Shoe Corporation as a Regional Director of Retail Development. Boone and Louise had exciting assignments in Dallas, Los Angeles and Atlanta. They moved to the corporate office in Cincinnati where Boone was the National Director of Retail Development until returning to Dallas in 1985 and completing his career with U.S. Shoe. He then spent a number of years as a consultant in the retail industry.
Boone thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years with his family and close friends. Of special note was his close relationship and communication with Ralph Seals, Sr. Attending Ralph's 100th birthday celebration in 2019 brought great joy to Boone and Louise. It was a special event sharing a lifetime of memories.
Boone was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hobart where he was in the choir and attended Grace Presbyterian Church in Plano, Texas. He was a proud member of the Hobart Kiwanis Club, serving many positions, including President. He was also a strong supporter of HHS athletics, serving in the Quarterback Club. Golf was a passion and he was a member of the Hobart Country Club and Prestonwood Country Club in Dallas, where he had years of enjoyment playing golf with Mike Stephenson and Jimmy Webber.
Boone is survived by his wife Louise, daughter Cindy and husband Randy Brown and daughter Kathy Funk; granddaughters Heather Brown Dollarhide, Liz Brown Scalise and Brian Scalise, Jacqueline Funk and Leslie Funk Campos and husband Juan; great grandchildren Layla Stern, Taylor Howard, Thomas Howard, Jonathan Campos, Paige Campos, Pierce Campos, Lily Scalise, Olivia Pinto and James Zastrow; and great great grandson Noah Stern.
