Bill Fowler passed from this earth in the early morning on August 1. He had recently relocated from Anadarko, Oklahoma to assisted living in Charleston, West Virginia to be closer to family. At the end he was with family, lucid and at peace. He knew he was loved by family and many friends.
He was born in Abilene Texas on March 10, 1932 during the depression dust bowl era. He suffered from malnutrition as a child and referred to his parents as dirt farmers or basically sharecroppers. Bill rose from those humble beginnings to become a preacher, earn a doctoral degree in Theology and later became a beloved college professor in Philippi, West Virginia.
His life was separated into three main acts. In the first act he was a full time minister at baptist churches in Albuquerque, New Mexico and then later Boulder, Colorado. He married young as they all mostly did in his day. He was 19 and his wife Irene was 18. While in Boulder he felt the calling of teaching and attended Iliff School of Theology at the University of Denver and obtained his doctorate in Theology. He and his wife Irene had five children who all went on to enjoy happy successful lives.
He then started his second act as a college professor at Alderson-Broaddus University in Philippi WV teaching religion and philosophy and later serving as Chaplain at the University. He always kept his hand in preaching on Sunday serving as an interim pastor at churches in Hepzibah, Summerville, and Oak Grove, West Virginia.
After the death of his first wife Irene Reese Fowler (also from Anadarko) and his retirement from teaching at Alderson-Broaddus, he started the third and final act of his life after reconnecting with a childhood friend Jean Carpenter from Anadarko. He married Jean and relocated back to Anadarko where he spent many happy years at "Fowler's Cove" and enjoyed working with Reach Out and serving as Andy Ray's Dad. He became a member of the Anadarko Masonic Lodge and was member of the Lions Club. He was an active part of his step children's lives. His wife Jean preceded him in death in 2021.
In each of his three acts he touched countless lives in a positive way. In all he leaves behind his children, step children, their spouses and many grandchildren who all adored him.
He will be buried in Anadarko Oklahoma at a graveside service Monday, August 7th at 10:00 AM in the family plot that includes his Mother, Father, Brother and Sister. God Bless Bill Fowler and his journey into heaven
