Bernice Sue (Slemp) Vandeventer was born on October 2, 1918 to Henry Clinton Slemp and Addie Mae (Warner) Slemp in Jonesvile, Virginia. Bernice was "Born Again" as a teenager in a brush arbor meeting at Spring Creek and baptized in a stock tank on the Rufus Hardy farm. Bernice went to join her heavenly family at the age of 104 on May 15, 2023.
When Bernice was very young Addie Mae and four children (Letcher, Bernice, Clinton and JB) traveled to Oklahoma by train and settled in Caddo County. H.C. Slemp joined them in Oklahoma at a later date.
Bernice married Waldo Harold Vandeventer on January 28, 1939 and to this union was born one daughter and two sons.
Bernice and Harold resided in Caddo and Greer counties most of their lives. In the early years being the wife of a farmer, Bernice not only worked on the farm, but made clothes for the entire family. She also crocheted afghans, made quilts and did beautiful needle work.
While living in Greer county at Granite, Bernice was employed for many years at C&R Grocery as the head checkout person.
Bernice was an active member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Gracemont. She will be remembered for her time given to the community and especially helping make those delicious cinnamon rolls.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold and son Chad; siblings, Letcher, Clinton, J.B., Gene, Ann.
Bernice is survived by daughter Stella Tyler and husband Ken of Havre, Montana, son Leslie Vandeventer and wife Mable of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, Grandchildren Tonja Ohradzansky and husband Dave of Flower Mound, Texas, Kevin Tyler and wife Patricia of Grand Island, NY, Tracey Jette and husband Joe of Havre, Montana, Tricia Blalock and husband Ken of McGregor, Texas; eight great grandchildren, Payton Ohradzansky, Drake Tyler, Kierstyn Tyler, Cody Vogleman, Niklas Blalock, Benjamin Blalock, Rachel Jette and Joey Jette, sister Mildred Leonard of Weatherford, OK., ten nieces and six nephews as well as many other loving family and friends.
