Bernice Morgan Files was born when babies were delivered in the home rather than the hospital. Dr. F.F. Martin delivered Bernice March 18, 1921, in the home of her grandmother Kate Butler. Her parents were Mary Butler Morgan and Elmer Clyde Morgan. Mr. Morgan farmed several years in Washita County where Bernice attended Gladson School one year, Consolidated Eight one year and graduated from Roosevelt High School with the Class of 1938. Bernice accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord & Savior and was baptized in Elk Creek August 1929. She married Vernon L. Files June 2nd, 1939. They lived and worked on the farm until after the death of Vernon in March 1995. Bernice was an active member of First Baptist Church, Roosevelt, where she was heavily involved in vacation bible school for many years. She then moved to Hobart and became an active member of the First Baptist Church and was excited to be involved with the Kings Kids children's worship service. She was also a volunteer Pink Lady at Elkview General Hospital and Director of the Kiowa County Court Appointed Advocates "CASA" for abused children. Bernice suffered a stroke in October 2001, as this did curtail her community activities; she continued to be a source of strength and courage to many who came into her life. Bernice moved to the Tamarack Assisted Living Center in Altus in 2003. She quickly became very active in all the activities offered and made many friends with the residents as well as the employees at Tamarack. She lived at there until her passing on Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011.
