Auma Jean Holt

Auma Jean Holt of Cordell, Oklahoma, passed away January 17, 2018, in the Elkview Hospital in Hobart, Oklahoma, at the age of 93. Auma Jean was born September 22, 1924 on a farm near Rocky, Oklahoma, to Amos James and Winnie (Baird) Price. At an early age, she moved to Cloud Chief where she attended Cloud Chief Public Schools graduating in 1942. She married Henry Ray Holt on March 18, 1944 in Cordell, Oklahoma. She enjoyed many lifelong friends from Cloud Chief and was actively involved in the school activities there. She and Hank served as class parents to several classes at Cloud Chief through the years. They were chiefly responsible for the first all-school reunion in 1980 that was held every other year for several years.

At an early age, she began pulling (not picking) cotton for her dad, and she loved talking about it to anyone who would listen.

Auma Jean worked hard besides Hank on the farm making sure all workers were fed a home-cooked meal at meal at noon and a hardy afternoon snack during harvest in addition to driving the wheat truck and teaching the "kids" how to pull and chop cotton. She always had a garden from which she canned all vegetables.

When the children transferred to Cordell Public Schools, she worked in the cafeteria at Lincoln Elementary School, the Red Barn Cafe, and later at Robertson's Factory. After retiring from Robertson's, she and Hank cared for the building at Northside Church of Christ. They also helped with the funeral dinners, other church functions, and Cordell High School FFA banquets. One of her favorite hobbies was teaching anyone interested, how to prepare and cook calf fries for the FFA dinners.

She delighted in attending sports events for her children and grandchildren. Whether it was football and wrestling, which she did not understand, basketball, baseball, softball, or showing cattle or pigs. She delighted in seeing her children and grandchildren compete even if the conditions were sub freezing.

Auma Jean was an excellent seamstress making many of Winnie and Charlene's clothes when they were younger. She basically taught herself to crochet. Crocheting became a passion and she crocheted chests full of afghans, placemats, pot holders and, of course she left baskets of yarn and material for future projects.

Another passion was cooking and baking. She was well-known for her fruit pies, angel food cakes, hot rolls, and cinnamon rolls. The grandkids especially loved her apricot fried pies. She always had a freezer full of ice cream, a refrigerator full of Dr. Peppers, and jars full of candy strategically placed. In case company came, she could prepare a six-course meal in minutes and loved doing it.

Her passions for cooking and crocheting waned after Hank passed away and as her physical abilities declined. She and Hank celebrated 57 1/2 years of marriage. She adjusted but never recovered from his sudden death in October 2001.

She is also preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers: Orville Price, Jake Price, James Price, and one sister Hyawannah Ward. She is also preceded in death by Hanks brothers & sisters and their spouses.

Jeff and Cindy King, Midwest City, Oklahoma,
Jaymi and Ryan McIlvoy, Choctaw, Oklahoma,
Barclay and Camile Holt, Shattuck, Oklahoma,
Greg and Amanda Holt, Hobart, Oklahoma,
Jon Marc, Midlothian, Texas,
22 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Auma Jean never aspired for greatness. She followed her passions for her husband Hank, being a good homemaker, a good mother, a good cook, a loving grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. In becoming good at these passions she created a place in the hearts of relatives and friends who knew hew well. These places in our hearts cannot be replaced, but we have memories of her pie baking, eating her dinners, greeting us at ball games, and feeling the warmth of love when we snuggle under an afghan crocheted by Auma Jean.

A funeral service for Auma Jean Holt will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 20, 2018, at the Northside Church of Christ in Cordell, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Ray & Martha's Funeral Home, Cordell, Oklahoma.
