Annie Mae Grubbs

Annie Mae Grubbs, 93, passed away November 11, 2016 at Autumn Leaves Memory Care Facility in Oklahoma City. She was born May 3, 1923 in Soper, OK, the oldest daughter of 11 children of Andrew Jackson Nowell and Girtha H. Roden Nowell. Her family moved to Greer County, OK, where she met and married John A. Grubbs on July 29, 1943. They moved from Greer County to Dill City in 1958, where they lived until her husband retired from teaching in 1974. They then moved to Cordell, where Annie Mae lived until after her 90th birthday, when she then required assisted living. At the urging of her children, Annie Mae retired at the age of 80 from her job at Clinton-Sherman with her maintenance corporation. Annie Mae had worked at various jobs, ranging from sewing for the public to owning grocery stores to having a maintenance corporation. She always understood the value of hard work. She served the Lord joyfully and was a member of the Cordell First United Methodist Church, where she attended until her move to Oklahoma City. Annie Mae inspired everyone with her love, her faith, her smile, and her strong determination to persevere through life's struggles. She loved watching her Sooners, her Dallas Cowboys, and her OKC Thunder. Her hobbies were gardening, quilting, crocheting, and sewing. She was preceded in death by her husband John, her oldest child Phyllis, two infants, brothers Colvin, Stanley, Hall and Frank Nowell, and sisters Ida Vinson, Dollie Banks, and Betty McAlexander. Annie Mae is survived by children Joey (Cindy) Grubbs, Tim (Leslie) Grubbs, Diane (Toby) Thompson, Dennis Grubbs, and Lisa Austin, brother Roy (Bettye) Nowell, sisters Edith Grubbs and Peggy Sanchez, 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 15 at 10 am at the Cordell First United Methodist Church, followed by burial at Jester Cemetery in Greer County. Funeral is under the direction of Ray & Martha's Funeral Home in Cordell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
